The EU-funded iCULTURE project continues to demonstrate how research and innovation can translate into real-world impact. Building on scientific advances developed within the project and its sister initiative iFermenter, a new spin-off company, NORFERMA, has been established to bring cutting-edge bioprocess technologies closer to industrial application.
NORFERMA focuses on advanced bioprocess and fermentation technologies designed to convert biological resources, such as seaweed biomass, into high-value products. The company develops digitalized bioprocessing and precision fermentation solutions that integrate sensors, automation and AI-driven control to optimize microbial production processes and ensure consistent yields at scale.
Within the iCULTURE project, NORFERMA will play a key role in scaling up a process that has already been successfully demonstrated at laboratory scale. The technology involves the fermentation of sugars derived from seaweed (invasive species and side streams), enabling the valorisation of residual biomass in line with circular bioeconomy principles. The next crucial step is to validate this process at a semi-pilot or pilot scale (15–20 L bioreactors). This scale-up phase, implemented by NORFERMA, will allow the consortium to test process robustness and operational performance under conditions closer to industrial environments.
Demonstrating the process at this intermediate scale is essential to bridge the gap between laboratory experimentation and full industrial deployment in large-scale bioreactors. Successful results will provide the technical evidence needed to support the further industrial development of iCULTURE results and technologies, turning seaweed biomass and side streams into valuable bioactives for sectors such as food, feed, pharmaceuticals and bio-based chemicals.
The creation of NORFERMA highlights the strong innovation potential emerging from European research projects and represents an important step toward transforming scientific discoveries into scalable industrial solutions that support the circular and sustainable bioeconomy.
